Having completed an MA cum laude at UCT, Nicholas worked in education, theatre and film, before cutting his teeth in advertising as a copywriter with Young & Rubicam on brands like Caltex, Gabriel Shock Absorbers, Musica, Unifruco, and Metropolitan Life. Four years later he moved to J. Walter Thompson, which was followed by his appointment as Senior Writer and Copy Chief at Addison Want Stroebel Goren JWT. Here he formed part of the pitch-winning Nike creative team and worked on brands such as Jose Cuervo, Gilbey’s London Dry, Safmarine, Hi-Tec Shoes, Tiger Wheel & Tyre, Frasers International, Halls, Chiclets, Dentyne, Clorets, Vita C, Schick, and Listerine.

Here, in addition to managing the existing brands such as Porsche, The Cancer Association, Grundig, and the Cape Technikon, he was responsible for pitch-winning work on Master Currency, DSat, Gray Security, Prudential, KWV International, Daewoo Motors, Samsung Monitors and Tarsus Technologies.
In 2002, pursuing his vision of a creatively-led, socially committed and joyful agency, he founded Machete Creative, where he is currently wearing two pith helmets, acting as both Managing and Creative Director.
