IOL website bans Zille’s hair

An online advertising campaign for Property World, an exclusive Century City estate agency, fell foul of Independent Online’s internal censors when the website banned a humorous reference to Helen Zille’s hairdresser as being potentially one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets.

“We were informed of the website’s decision hours before the campaign was due to break,” said Nic Shepherd of Machete Creative, “despite the fact that they had the material for over a week. We were forced to come up with a replacement reference to one of Cape Town’s other best kept secrets – heard about the courteous taxi driver on the N2? – and substituted it overnight into the banner campaign and the interactive game that accompanies it.

“I think it’s ridiculous that a mild and inoffensive reference to one of Cape Town’s best known public figures should fall foul of this sort of political over-sensitivity, especially at the hands of the press itself! I’m sure Helen’s hairdresser wouldn’t have minded!”
