MacheteMail & Google Analytics
MacheteMail now offers incredibly detailed new reporting through integration with Google Analytics. Google Analytics is a free application that allows you to study the behaviour of your website’s visitors. If you already use Google Analytics on your site, you can now enable Google Analytic to track links automatically in your email campaigns. This will give you fantastic insight into how your email campaigns are working, how many people they are attracting to your site and what links they are clicking on to get there.
Clickstream data is passed from MacheteMail to the analytics package and goals you have set within Google Analytics can be assessed. The medium will be shown as ‘Email’, the source as your account name, and the campaign as the newsletter name. We also pass along the link name and the email address so that you can track this data all the way through to a conversion.
You can turn on a Google Analytics encoded link for any named link in your sends. To name a link and turn on the Google Analytics encoding, click on the ‘links’ sub-menu in the blue newsletter menu.
Two text boxes will appear. In the first field, enter the URL that you want to pass on to Google Analytics and in the second, the name you want to give that link for reporting purposes. After you have enabled the link, you will see it enabled in a table. You can edit or delete any of these links at any time.
Setting Up Your Email Links
After you have enabled Google Analytics on a given link, the tracking code will be applied to that link automatically. The newsletter subject will be passed through as the campaign name so that you can track goals back to the email newsletter.
Setting Up Your Goals
It is important to have goals set up in Google Analytics so that you can use this data to see true conversions. You will be able to see goal conversions based on the information passed though us and on to the analytics package.
Google Analytics Reports
With Google Analytics reports, you will be able to gather the following information and perform the following functions:
- Relate goal conversions back to a specific email address
- Relate goal conversions back to the link in the email
- Average number of page views per visit, tied to a specific email address or link
- Average time on the site, tied to a specific email address or link
- Landing page bounce rate, tied to a specific email address or link
- Overall conversions from a specific email send or from all your sends
- Overall average amount of page views per visit for all your sends, or specific sends
- Overall average time on site for all your sends, or specific sends
- Overall landing page bounce rates for all your sends, or specific sends
- Number of total visits from all your sends, or specific sends
To view data based on the email links or by the specific email addresses, click on the campaign name (subject line). You will now see a detailed page for this email. Click on the segment drop-down and select ‘keyword’ to view data by the link or ‘ad content’ to view data by a specific email address.
By selecting ‘keyword’, you will see a list of the links by the title tag they were given. We can see how many visits came through each link, the average number of pages viewed for each click, the average time spent on the site and the landing page bounce rates. By clicking the ‘goal conversions’ tab, we can see all of the goal conversion percentages for the time period selected.
By selecting ‘ad content’, you will see a list of the links by the email addresses. We can see how many visits each user made, the average number of pages viewed for each visit, the average time spent on the site by this subscriber and by clicking the ‘goal conversions’ tab, we can also see all of the goal conversion percentages by email addresses for the time period selected.
There are many other segment options to choose from, for example to see detailed information such as regional data and system settings. For more information on what can be done with Google Analytics, view the Google Analytics Help Center.
