World’s Best World Cup Ad Finalist
PUMA TAKES IT FOR GHANA!
Against the odds, against the combined might of Coca Cola, Nike, adidas, ESPN and many other international power brands, Puma’s ‘Journey of Football’ TV commercial has been voted the World’s Best World Cup Ad by the readers of The Cutting Edge.
In a hard-fought final that went into extra time of several days because the voting was tied, Puma’s spot narrowly defeated ESPN’s and Bono’s blockbuster by 2 goals to 1. For each 30% of the votes, we awarded one goal. The final tally was 67% for Puma against 33% for ESPN.
The TV spot, created by Syrup, Puma’s global advertising agency, is the latest in the LOVE = FOOTBALL campaign, which encompasses everything from chalk drawings and stickers to websites and billboards.
According to Syrup, the commercial was created to be: “A celebration of true football. For Africa. For football. For the insane love of the game we possess that unites us beyond borders. Bringing football back to its roots. Because love is football.”
The 60 second spot is a truly beautiful tribute to Africa’s love of the beautiful game, evoking the infectious enthusiasm, raw passion and pride that the continent’s first World Cup has created.
Shot on location in Angola, Ghana and the Ivory Coast, and with a hugely energetic soundtrack ‘Going On’ by Gnarls Barkley, the ad features Puma-sponsored players Samuel Eto’o, Gervinho, Emmanuel Eboue and Mohammed Zidan. Well done to Puma, Syrup and Africa!
